Starting a new exercise regimen can seem a little daunting at times. If you’re new, it can be intimidating to walk into a gym and see all the equipment and the people who look like they’ve been doing this for years. If you try to work out at home, you haven’t a clue what you should be doing. Hiring a personal trainer is a great path, but can cost more than you may be able to spend. Sound familiar?
Sometimes the solution can be as easy as lacing up the sneakers and heading outdoors. Walking is the simplest form of exercise you can do. It’s free, functional, and you can do it any time, anywhere. You don’t even need WiFi! Walking may not sound exciting to most, but there are countless health benefits that can come of it. Not to mention it forces you to work postural muscles that can become dysfunctional sitting at our desk jobs each day. Walking has gotten a lot of attention over the last several years with the boom of wearables and step counting. Lost in all of this is how therapeutic walking can be as well. I know whenever I take my dog out for a walk, it is usually the clearest my mind ever gets. It’s a great way to clear my head, and become more in-tune with myself and my environment. This new year, don’t be in a hurry to tackle some new exercise routine that you found online when you’ve spent the last year on the couch. Start easy. Take a walk. Don’t be afraid to take a friend either! Enjoy the outdoors, enjoy each other, and enjoy the journey.

It's almost the new year, and that usually means people decide they need to make drastic changes in their life. Typically this revolves around diet and exercise. I work in the fitness industry so I witness this first-hand every year. People are tired of looking, feeling, and being unhealthy. Therefore, the only solution is to hit the gym at full speed, and crash diet. "New Year, New You" right?
While I know intentions are good, this may not be the best strategy. Doing this inevitably leads to failure. Restriction in your eating habits leads to over-indulging once you cannot stick to a strict diet, and you are so sore and beaten down after the first week of exercise that it is no longer worth the pain. So, you give up and resort to old behaviors. Until next year anyway. Instead of jumping in head first then ending up in way over your head, try just dipping your toes in the water. If you have previously done nothing, then simply doing something is a vast improvement. Go for a walk. Drink a bottle of water instead of a bottle of soda. Catch some Z's instead of the next Netflix season. Disconnect from your phone, and connect with your family. Do something. Not everything, just something. "Yeah, yeah...easy for your to say!" Look, it's easy for everyone to SAY. It's just as hard for me to change unhealthy habits as anyone else. And I am definitely not always successful. I rely on others to help me through it. If you are one of those who needs some help, even if only to be kept accountable, I'm always here to help. I hope you have a happy and healthy New Year! |
