To piggy-back off last week's post, I wanted to promote Family Fitness Day, which will be this Saturday, June 8. I spoke about being active with your kids in last weeks post, and I want to send the same message this week, but focusing on the entire family!
Many times the importance of community support, or your own personal support network is overlooked in being successful in achieving desired outcomes. Having someone holding you accountable, being there to share your success, or provide encouragement through your struggles is paramount to achieving, and perhaps more importantly, maintaining your success. The closest support system you can have is your family. You are around them more than any other group, and share in daily habits. However, this is not always the most beneficial support system you may have. So many times, one person in the family is trying to make healthy changes in their life only to be unsupported, or finding themselves being the only one. Adherence to a healthier lifestyle is much higher when those closest to you are sharing your desires and adopting the same practices. Doing so can lead to spending more quality time together, having something (else) in common, and create more closeness. When you are celebrating your successes together, and comforting each other during the tough times, you can feel more connected. Like so many things, it may just take a single moment of inspiration in order to kick off new habits. Healthy families are happy families, so use this Saturday as a starting point for you and your family to begin your journey toward health TOGETHER. The best part of the times we live in is that you don't even have to live close to your family to stay connected. Social media apps, FaceTime, Skype, and others make it so much easier to maintain you connection with friends and family without physically being together. So, don't assume that if someone isn't close, you cannot support each other. Obviously, the broader the reach the better. "That sounds great! But how do we get started?" So glad you asked! Below are just some steps/ideas you can take to begin planning your family journey toward improved health: Set Your Goals: Each family member may have a different goal(s), be you will need one. My suggestion is to think big, and then work backwards. If you have a lofty goal you would like to achieve, set it. Be sure to set a time you want to have reached this goal as it will make it a lot easier to work backwards, and allow you to reevaluate as you go. For example, we'll say 1 year. Now, what would you need to do each month to meet that yearly goal. Then, what would you need to do each week to meet that monthly goal. Then, what daily activities would you need to do to reach your weekly goal, and so on. Share Your Goals: Share your goals with you family. Doing this will better help them keep you accountable, and if you share similar goals with someone else, you can use each other as resources for what may or may not be working to achieve that goal. Determine How You'll Do It: Now that you have your goals, how are you going to get there. Is there a specific exercise program you plan to follow? Is there a specific nutrition plan that interests you? Are you going to train for a race? Whatever it is, determine the method. It does not have to be the same for everyone, but as with the goals, it might be best to share what you're doing with your group as well. Get a Coach: Sometimes looking at the prospect of making drastic lifestyle changes can be a little daunting. If you are not sure where to start, or you and your family feel you need accountability or guidance from a third party, a coach is a great way to go. If you plan to begin a fitness program, hiring a Fitness Coach is a good start. If you have no idea what it means to "eat right," then finding a Nutrition Coach is a step in the right direction. I have devoted my career to health and fitness coaching and am always eager to help. My passion is making people better than they were before, so if finding a coach is a step you need to take to get you started, I would love to help. You can find more information on how I can help you begin your journey here. Family Fitness Day is just that, it's one day. We all know the quote "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Your family's journey to improved health can begin with a single day. Even if you don't necessarily perform a fitness activity or start a program on this day, committing to make a positive change is a great and essential first step. Between now and Saturday, I am challenging you to communicate with any and all family members who would be interested in committing to establishing healthy lifestyle changes, and try to at least get a commitment from those who want to participate by Saturday. And, feel free to take your family out for some fun family fitness to honor Family Fitness Day as well. Enjoy!
